DELPHINIUM (Larkspur)
Tall stately perennials that are an old time favorite but are relatively short-lived. Most prefer cooler climates and well-drained alkaline soils (add lime). Delphiniums are heavy feeders and benefit from addition of humus to the soil. Taller types have hallow stems and may require staking to protect from the wind and rain.

DIANTHUS (Border Carnation) Wonderful mound or mat forming plants that have beautiful spring bloom. They all require very well-drained soil, full sun, and slightly alkaline soil (add lime).

DICENTRA (Bleeding Hearts) is an old time favorite for the shade garden, which has dangling heart-shaped flowers in the spring. dicentra grow best in filtered sunlight in well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Plants have a tendency to go dormant in the heat of the summer or if the soil becomes too dry. Maintaining the foliage during the summer can be done by keeping the soil evenly moist and providing more shade.
